Loving the Liturgy of the Hours
Another solemnity coming up June 29, Ss Peter and Paul.
I was wondering if someone could lend me advice on both a spiritual and practical level on personal circumstances. Is it practical to juggle the full Divine office, a sport and a potential full time job. Please keep me in your prayers, help on this matter is greatly appreciated. God bless.
I personally find both my family and my professional responsibilities start to suffer when I slack off in my prayer rule and my days are not grounded in the daily Office. On the other hand, "pray as you can, not as you can't," they say. So I try not to beat myself up over missing offices. My simplest advice would be to just pick something and stick to it as best as you can.
Mitchell, remember that the morning and evening prayers are the "hinges" on which everything else in the Office depend on. If you can say just those two, you're doing fine. Also, we depend on other people to pray the whole office.
Dear Mitchell, In my life it's not practical to do more than Morning and Evening Prayer and Night Prayer. And sometimes these slip to Morning OR Evening Prayer depending on the roster I'm working. On quiet days, I read the readings of the Office of Readings too but don't pray the psalms. As lay people we are supposed to be engaged with the world and so our lives are part of our prayer lives too. Your life routine will change and so will your prayers. And if Divine Office really isn't possible for a bit, leave it for a while and come back to it refreshed. It shouldn't become a burden and maybe the Lord has a reason why someone else needs your attention for a while. (Though I always try to do Night Prayer to keep me in the routine).
Hi Mitchell and everyone else, I'm late to the discussion because I've had pneumonia for a few days, but I see everything has been said. But if you need my final word on this topic: the only people who have to seriously worry about juggling the full Divine Office with their job and personal lives are religious and clergy who are formally bound to do so.For the rest of us, there is never any obligation to do all, or any of this. My personal goal is Morning, Evening, Office of REadings, one daytime hour (never all three) and Night Prayer. In everyday reality, I miss one of those most days. To paraphrase Our Lord, The Divine Office was made for man, not man for the Divine Office.

No, that's fine. It's always good to let people know about good deals on used breviaries. By the way, I don't know if you are on Facebook, but there is a new group strictly for used of the LOTH and/or the Anglican Ordinariate Office. It's called Liturgy of the Hours Disucssion and Support.
As much as iv learnt that lauds on all types of memorials are used using the weekday psalter with antiphons. I.e tomorrow opt. Mem of st Maria Goretti, would be hymn from the common, weekday psalter with weekday antiphons including intercessions, and concluding prayer of st Maria Goretti, would the same apply for vespers of all kinds of memorials using the hymn and concluding prayer and everything from the day office or would the commons be used? Thanks.

Antiphon: Common or Proper*Intercessions: Common or Proper*Prayer: Proper* For memorials, according to the rubrics currently in force, you *may* pull anything I've marked with an asterisk from either the common/proper, *or* the weekday office - and so long as you keep the proper prayer, it is still considered to be the office of that memorial. But that is an enormous departure from the traditional structure of, and rationale for, the Office. It also makes no sense: it's kind of like ordering a double cheeseburger but "no meat, hold the cheese, and I'll skip the bun - just leave some lettuce." I would therefore recommend following the age-old tradition of "Proper trumps Common trumps Weekday" (with the psalter itself always coming from the weekday, of course, unless the proper provides its own or says that psalms and/or antiphons are to come from the common). In short, for any Memorials (optional or not), pull everything except the psalter from the common or proper.
Well, you're right, but for the wrong reasons if my understanding is correct.Both SHJ ad St. John the Baptist are equivalents on the Table of Liturgical Days ("3. Solemnities of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and saints listed in the General Calendar. All Souls.")The universal norm is that when two equal feasts are back-to-back, then EP1 of the subsequent day is omitted ("Should on the other hand, Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the current day’s Office and First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of the following day be assigned for celebration on the same day, then Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the celebration with the higher rank in the Table of Liturgical Days takes precedence; in cases of equal rank, Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the current day takes precedence.")What will really be interesting is when SHJ and Corpus Christi fall on the same exact day as SJB and/or SSP&P. I've heard that it is customary to keep SHJ and CC on the appointed days and transfer the saints' days.
