Cyber Monday: Everybody's Getting in on the Act

Even DivineOffice.org

They're having a Cyber Monday sale on their iOS, Android, and Mac apps. I can't tell you much about these, since I use a Kindle for my mobile breviary. But if you own one of the above gadgets, or better yet, have a friend who owns one, check it out. This might be just the motivation someone was waiting for to start a new Divine Office habit.

  1. Question: yesterday I used your sidebar LOTH handy widget thing for my Morning Prayers. I noticed that at the end of some of the Psalm lines there are red astericks. What are these for? They're not in my hard-copy book.

  2. The asterisks (and sometimes little red crosses, too) are markings for groups of people who want to recite or chant it back and forth, verse by verse. Person #1 gets the line ending in the asterisk and then the following line, then person two gets the next 2-line section. The red cross is used when the verses go in 3-line chunks. The print breviary uses a different custom of dividing the psalm into larger chunks for reciting it in two groups.

  4. Hi! I love reading the LOTH - have been since I stumbled on Universalis many years ago. Could you tell me which Breviary you use with the Kindle? Thanks you and God Bless!

  5. Kim, the best one for Kindle seems to be ibreviary.com You need the Kindle model that has the "experimental" web browser option. (Not all of them do)It's a bit tricky getting it started.Using your kindle web browser go to the ibreviary homepage, click on the word"English" on top so it stops being in Italian, then scroll halfway down and click on the little white sign/banner in the middle of the page where it says "Ibreviary/app for prayer/click here and pray. This should bring you to the daily menu for today. Next, and this is important--bookmark this page, so you can get to it easily in the future. Then use the menu to find the hour. The only shortcoming is that it changes to the next day's prayers at 6PM, so if you do not do evening prayer before that, you have to go through a complicated process to turn the date back.
